Traffic ranking
I dunno how they do it but Alexa
somehow has a traffic ranking for my site before I even signed up.
Weird.

Joke lines
I was just listening to BinRev Radio episode 63 and Stank
mentioned a
telephone entertainment website. I checked it out and it's
pretty amusing. Give it a whirl.
On another note the Bell's Mind AIM bot [AIM name: bellsmind] is back up due to popular request. Enjoy it while it lasts! :P

Nortel Millennium manual
I grabbed this file from hektik.org. They have a strict no linking
policy so I decided to provide a mirror (this file is lost now, let
me know if you still need it!).
This Nortel Millennium manual is public information (as stated on the first page). The file is 134.3MB and contains 351 pages. Enjoy!

Fixed some links
Someone e-mailed me and told me that,
while the links on the main blog work, the links on the permalinked
blog don't.
The problem has been fixed so all should be well in the world of my blog. If it's not e-mail me.

New conference sounds
I decided to change the enter and
leave sounds on the Bell's Mind bridge today. It wasn't quite as
easy as I thought. Here's the process...
1) Record a sound (sound.wav).
2) Convert the sound to 8 KHz ulaw (sox sound.wav -r 8000 sound.ul).
3) Hex dump the ulaw file with the octal dump utility (od -t x1 sound.ul > sound.h)
4) Now mangle the values by hand into a C style array (I won't explain that here).
5) Modify the Asterisk source to use your new sound, recompile and restart Asterisk (I won't explain that here either).
I figured after all my hard work that it'd be a welcome addition to the box. Boy was I wrong... :P Listen to the new enter and leave sounds and let me know what you think.
If you have some sounds you'd rather hear on the bridge, of course, e-mail me. Just don't ask for the default Asterisk sounds because I absolutely hate them (especially the enter sound).

star38 - CEO JJ gets clowned
So this new company star38 is the big buzz in the telco
world right now. They offer a caller ID/CPN spoofing service to
bill collectors and private investigators.
The CEO of this company is completely clueless. He claims that he's not using VoIP or a PRI when we're all pretty sure that he's using VoIP. He's actually bold enough to say that his technique is legal while the "means in which people are spoofing caller ID over VOIP is illegal right now".
Honestly I don't know what to say about this except that this guy probably has no clue as to what's going on behind the scenes. To prove the point that he's a lost soul in the world of VoIP you'll have to keep reading.
It all started when Natas called him out. Jason Jepson, the CEO of star38, was quick with a comeback. The voice of reason steps in when Kevin Poulsen laid down the law.
I'm not sure what JJ was thinking when he posted that message but it clearly illustrates that he has no concept of what VoIP is and/or how it works. My suggestion is to keep as far away from this company as possible and see what happens. If this guy is running the show like this and doesn't have someone else as his technical backup I'd say they'll be out of business in a few months.
